Potted Ficus Tree icon

A potted ficus needs strong light and it is difficult to bring one all the way indoors without suffering daily leaf drop. However, as patio trees in filtered light they are quite effective. Property owners are strongly advised to avoid planting ficus hedges not only for the high maintenance requirement, but for natural considerations. Most of the ficus sold as hedge material in South Florida are species which attain heights of 90' in the wild. As a ficus hedge becomes older and older, as with people, it is more and more difficult to make it do what you want.

is best grown in a pot in Florida, in bright light. In the landscape it sheds many leaves daily and the root system goes wild around underground water lines of any sort.

Potted Areca Palm

is a fine pot plant for a place with some direct sunlight. While Areca landscape specimens have beautiful trunks when exposed by cleaning out young growing clumps in the crown, without ongoing frond removal and fertilizing, an Areca palm hedge can become quite ratty looking. In fact, it may become quite a ratty habitat as well! Many landscapers make the mistake of planting this large clumping palm too close together in order to create an instant privacy screen.
