This book is a continuation of the development of the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) specifically designed for use against, and management of, fruit flies. serveral factors indicate an increased use of the SIT against fruit flies within the next decade.
First, the leaders of the fruit and vegetable industries in many countries are acutely aware that their profitability depends on exporting fruits and vegetables to lucrative markets in developed countries that will not tolerate the introduction of these pests. Second, the highly successful programs in Australia, Mexico, Japan, and elsewhere have already proven that the SIT can be used effectively under difficult situations. Third, the development of new technologies makes the SIT more acceptable, more reliable, and less expensive. Fourth, and most important, is the growing concern for the use of insecticides to control or eradicate populations or new infestations. Other programs geared to eradicate these pests suggest that the public will no longer tolerate extensive aerial applications of bait sprays or chemical insecticides, especially in urban and suburban areas.
The expanded use of the SIT creates a need for additional information and refinements in technology. Keep abreast of this important and timely topic. Send for your copy today.
