A Century of Cuban Writers in Florida

Selected Poetry and Prose, Carolina Hospital and Jorge Cantera

A Century of Cuban writers in Florida explores the intricate connection that has existed between Florida and Cuba for centuries by collecting the works of thirty-three Cuban writers who lived or live today in Florida. Among these, we find some of the most important Cuban men and women of letters, such as Felix Varela, Jose Marti, Juana Borrero, Enrique Labrador Ruiz, Jose Iglesias, and Ricardo Pau-Llosa. This book brings together their voices to create a remarkable literary journey through history. The works are presented in English, most translated here for the first time. Apart from these interesting and surprisingly topical works, the editors also provide an enlightening and comprehensive introduction. This introductory essay examines the historical importance of the Cuban contribution to Florida's heritage, a topic not found in many books about Florida. Both the literary works and the insightful introduction make this book a major addition to history, as well as the literary arts.

"places the work of Cubans writing in Florida in a larger political and social context. . . . a must-have for anyone interested in the evolution of Cuban literature." -- Copley News Service

"This book is a beautiful tribute to the Cuban men and women who contributed so much to Florida's cultural, economic, and political heritage." -- Linden Lane Magazine
