One evening on the internet, I happened upon a Botany Course
which clarified my profession as even I had never seen it. A Cultural Botanist is one who
scientifically studies the needs of plants, man's uses of plants, and how to improve the
aesthetic quality of everyday life with the right sort of plantings. For years I have
toiled in garden, landscape, and the halls of academia, driven only to study plants, study
garden and architectural styles, plant plants, and experiment with fertilizers. Never
actually finding an employment position which seemed to fit my trade, a career has been
made of hiring myself out in various capacities mostly as landscape and garden designer, then, in order of descending
frequency, as horticultural and landscape consultant, environmental and biological
consultant, consultant to the landscape architecture profession, and floral consultant and
designer for large and sometimes small events.
I had the time of my life studying temperate zone flora at North Carolina
State University, Raleigh, N.C., School of
Agriculture and Life Sciences back in the early 1970s, when I and my mates scoured the
Seven Hills of Raleigh and beyond for plant collections and whatever farm antiques we
could come across for decorating our humble apartments. Then. while raising a family, I
worked like a dog obtaining a Biology degree from Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton,
Florida, winning a Commendation for Academic Excellence from the College of Science.
After graduate school at Nova Center for Oceanographic Studies, Dania, Florida, not unlike a planktonic creature, I was swept
along on currents to the present moment and publication of this Guide to Florida Plant Life.
